Kappadokya, Turkey
Cappadokia was one of the poorest Turkish region even during Roman empire. It's in the center of Turkey, and it's all about long tofu valleys made by vulcanic eruption. Some areas are really funny like the Fairy Chimneys Valley or just amazing like Ilhara Valley, that is a big canion.
What makes Cappadokia even more beautiful are those first christians inscriptions, houses, and churches built excavating the tofu. There are beautiful frescos that decorated monastery, like in the Dark Church of Goreme or just isolated monastery like the Selim one. During those times (VI-IX c. AD), most of the christians found a safe place in the underground cities, like Derinkuyu, that is built in seven undreground levels.
