Pompeii and Vesuvian area, Italy
Naples and the Vesuvian area are well connected with Circumvesuviana, sort of small train that connect all the cities near Vesuvio.
Pompeii (NA): the archeological area of Pompeii is one of the most beautiful things in the world. The city was buried by the Vesuvio vulcanic eruption in 79 A.D and everything was left intact. It's the major exemple that we have for a roman city because everything is stuck at that moment. The area is very big, so it takes a day or two to visit all.
Ercolano (NA): same as Pompeii, much smaller because the modern city lived in the same place as the old one. Probably much more impressive for the dead people on the old "beach".
Stabia (NA): in Castellammare di Stabia, there are two villas, one of Arianna and one of San Marco. They worth a visit.
Naples: the caothic city of Naples is very beautiful. You should go visit the Archeological Museum which has all the "real" frescos, mosaics of Pompei, and other collection like the Farnese one, with lots of greek and roman sculpture. Then you should see from the Borbone era the Maschio Angioino, the Real Palace & Castel dell'Ovo. The best place to see at open air are Spaccanapoli, Plebiscito square, the Spanish quarters, and Toledo street which is the most important one.
Sorrento (NA): this city is the last before the amalfi coast, its very caractheristic with big rocks and beautiful artificial sea pool.
