Sevilla, Spain
Sevilla is one of the main cities in the south spanish region of Andalusia. Which was one of the latest region christianized during la reconquista of the 1200-1300.
The city has roman origins, you can see roman ruins under the Metropol Parasol and lots of roman objects and mosaics are exposed at the Archeological Museum & in some aristocratic villas. After the roman empire during late antiquity Seville was influenced by visigots and then colonized by arabs. The arabic power (from IX c. AD until the XII c.) was impressive, like the Real Alcazar, similar to others Andalusia's palaces and costitued by azulejos and mujaddin, or the "Torre del Oro" for control the Guadalquivir, which is the Sevilla's flume. The arabic culture influenced the year during the christian power, in 1600 the fear of muslims can be seen in the ruins of the Castillo de San Jorge, which is the Tribunal of the Inquisiton, in Triana. Even in the Catedral and her tower Giralda (1400-1500), there's the arabic influence mixed with the gothic architecture, but the max arabic expression is in those aristrocratic houses like Casa de Pilatos, Casa Duenas, or Palacio de la Contesa Lebrija, it's kinda like to be in Istanbul. You should visiting l'Hospital de los Venerables Sacerdotes, it's a beautiful hospital dedicated to eldest priest and contain lots of Goya portraits, the Museum of Bellas Artes, with lots of spanish art, and l'Archivio General des Indias which contains ancient bibliographic contents like Cervantes letters or Columbus and Spanish american colonization maps. Modern and contemporary most beautiful expressions are the Metropol Parasol, simply amazing, and Placa d'Espana with huge gardens. Must see the neighborood La Macarena, which is very colored, and Triana where al the "toreros"(bullfighters) came from and specialized in ceramics. |
