Venice, Italy
SOME HISTORY
Old Venezia is amazing for her peculiar feature: it's an island surrounded by lagoon, there are no "streets" but water. During the Renaissance was one of the Mariner Republics, and administred by an oligarchy with a chief who is the Doge (from latin "dux" which means "commander"). The Renaissance influence is still perceptible in small streets and the aristocratic palaces. She's the only italian northern city (exept from Ravenna) with byzantine influence, in fact during the 4th Crusade in the 1204, Venice conquer Byzantium (Istanbul) and raid a lots of things. You can view these conquers in the San Marco's Cathedral like the bronze quadriga from the Hippodrome of Costantinopoli, out in the front. Or the Tetrarchs monument (end of III- IV century A.D) this one, during the raid, they miss a "foot", which is still conserved at the Archeological Museum of Istanbul. |
